The Struggle to Love

As I turn from my sins and turn closer to God, I see just how evil I truly am. I slowly see the darkness of my own heart and how much I suck at what once seemed simple.

Like love.

I don’t mean the love I show for God or even my wife and daughter.

It is my love for my fellow man and those I spend my time with.

Who Do You Pray To?

Many people pray, whether or not they admit it. People of faith all pray to the God or gods of their religion. Others pray before meals, on major holidays, weddings or some other large occasion. Countless other people pray when there is some kind of terror or challenge or disaster.

But I have to ask the question: when you pray, who do you pray to?

And I ask this question as a question of self-examining.

Who do you pray to?

What Cup Do You Need to Drink?

I want to draw our attention to a deep, extremely human point in the life of Jesus.

We all know that the major purpose of Jesus’ coming was to die on the cross, to be that perfect sacrifice that no one could ever offer, in order for us to be justified before God, and grant us access into God’s presence, both in this life and the life after this one.

And we know that Jesus had that goal in sight for His entire life. It never left His mind, especially as He reached the end of His life and began heading toward Jerusalem.

His crucifixion did not catch Him by surprise. He knew it was coming.

Here’s the kicker: on the night He was betrayed…He didn’t want to go through with it.

Who is Praying for You?

A while back, I was reading a book (surprise, surprise, for those who know me) in which the author talked about a prayer practice that he has (don’t ask me to remember the book. It was probably something I glanced over for class but stuck in my mind and spirit).

Anyway, the author talked about how he wrote out numbered list, from 1-31, one for each day of the month (approximately) and he listed a person next to each number and he committed to pray for that person on the day listed. And he wouldn’t just pray for them. He would call/email/text/Facebook message them and ask them if there was anything he could pray for.

And here’s the radical part: he actually prayed for them right then and there. He would type out the prayer and send it or pray right over the phone for them, and then spend the rest of the day praying for them whenever they came to mind.

I saw that and thought, “Hey, that would be a cool idea! I’d like to do that!”

Well, I never did. Until recently.

How not to worry

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell god what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” – Phillipians 4:6-7; NLT

I have found myself in a situation where my future with a company is up in the air. As I’m sure you can imagine, I am very worried, because I have bills to pay and loans to re-pay and I have a wife to help out financially in ensuring that we have a place to live and food to eat.

And as I’m driving home from work, a thought, a Scripture verse, to be specific, crossed my mind: “Be anxious for nothing…”

And that, of course, sets off a spiral of emotions that I’m not ready to face, but have no choice to face.
