There comes a time when we need to ask the question about who really rules the world. I’m not talking about politicians or world powers or anything like that.
I’m talking about supernaturally.
Who rules the world?
There’s a verse in the book of Revelation that goes like this:
“…The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.” (Revelation 11:15; KJV)
Many have quoted this verse as proving the sovereignty of God over this world.
Sure, we state that God is sovereign and in control of everything, but is this world, the one in which we live, breathe, eat, sleep, fight, and love, truly ruled by God?
When I look around, I don’t see it. Not because I don’t believe. But because, at least right now, it isn’t true. And it wasn’t true when Christ came and walked with us.
When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness by Satan, He was taken to a high mountain and was told that if He chose to worship Satan, then Jesus would be given all of the kingdoms of the world. In fact, Satan tells Jesus, “I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them…because they are mine to give to anyone I please.” (Luke 4:6; NLT)
I want to make a point here and state that Jesus doesn’t refute Satan’s claim about his authority in the world. While He didn’t recognize it, He also didn’t deny it. Makes one wonder…
Not only that, but the Apostle Paul recognized Satan’s authority in this world.
When writing to the Corinthians, Paul tells them that “…the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not…” (2 Corinthians 4:4). Satan is that god that Paul talks about. Paul also ascribes to Satan the title of “…the prince of the power of the air…” (Ephesians 2:2)
Going back to Jesus, He acknowledged that Satan has power and authority in this world. As a matter of fact, Jesus calls Satan, “…the prince of this world…” (John 14:30; 12:31).
The Scriptures reveal something very frightening: Satan is the ruler of this world.
But we can take heart! We can be happy! Even when we stand in the midst of Satan’s kingdom, we can rejoice!
Jesus has overcome the world! (John 16:33)
No matter what, we know that the day is coming when every kingdom on this earth, every government, every political party, will belong to Jesus and He will reign forever!
Be encouraged, my brothers and sisters. Be encouraged, Church. God reigns supreme.
This is what the Sovereign LORD says.
