I have been through a lot. I came through high school and college with great friends and great experiences. I landed my dream job just one year after getting my degree. I lost my dream job when things fell apart and I struggled through a year of trying times and disappointments. Somewhere along there I got engaged.
I went through a lot, just in the past year, with 4 months of something I never thought I would have had to endure at any point in my life. And through it all, God was there.
We tend to forget about God at times, don’t we? Especially when things are going well and we are at the top of the world, floating on Cloud 9. It’s easy to forget God there.
God knew that it was easy to forget Him. Not because He’s inconspicuous or insignificant, but just because that’s the way the human mind works. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve forgot all about God and ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. And that was in a paradise where there was no sin.
In today’s world, we have a very strong tendency to forget about God. And like I said, God knows that.
When God led the Hebrew people into the Promised Land, He gave them a very clear warning:
“Take care lest you forget the LORD your God…” (Deuteronomy 8:11)
He goes on to tell them that things will go well with them in the Promised Land and that they will have the tendency to forget about Him. But He reminded them that He “brought [them] out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery”. He “led [them] through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water.” He brought them water from a rock and fed them with manna that their forefathers did not know. (Deut. 8:14-16)
He warned them to never say “‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.'” (8:17)
I pray that we never say that. Whatever we gain, however far in life we come, whatever wealth we accumulate in this world, it is all because of God. He got you everything you have and will have.
So, no matter what happens in your life, good or bad, don’t forget God. He is beside you every step of the way.
“You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth…” (Deut. 8:18)
